Why do boardshorts chafe?

Traditional boardshorts are normally unlined, with a fixed waistband and quick-drying outer fabric.

They avoid irritating mesh, but because there is no layer between the thighs, they may not help reduce skin-on-skin friction. Some people solve this by wearing compression shorts underneath or packing a dry pair to change into later. That can work—but it also means extra layers, extra clothing and more to carry around.

Mesh-lined swim trunks

Many casual swim trunks come with that familiar loose, brief-shaped mesh net. Its job is fairly basic: provide a little support and coverage, allow water to drain quickly and remove the need for underwear.
