Men's

Your usual pant size gets you close, but pant sizing varies a lot between brands. If you have a tape handy, the measured column is the one to trust.

Measure your body, not a pair of pants. Legs sit just above the knee — around a 5 inch inside leg on M and L, a little shorter on the small sizes and longer on the big ones.

Boys'

Age is a starting point only — kids vary enormously. Waist is what actually decides the size.

A boys' size means the same waist in both ranges — a 10 is a 10. They just stop at different ends: † size 4 is Original Classics only, ‡ size 14 is Endless Summer only. Bigger than a 14? Most teens move into Men's XS.

Girls'

One girls' fit across the range, so this chart is the only one you need. Waist decides the size — age is just a guide.

Girls' shorts have a generous elastic waist with a drawstring, so there is a bit of give either way. Between sizes, or she is growing fast? Take the next size up.

Endless Summer or Original Classics — same size, different cut

The waist sizing is identical across both ranges. If you are a Men's M in one, you are a Men's M in the other, and a boys' 10 is a boys' 10. Overall length is the same too. What changes is the cut below the waist.

1 · YOUR WAIST Your natural waist Around your middle, level with your belly button — not where your jeans sit. Keep the tape snug, but don’t pull it tight. Measure, don’t guess. The bit that confuses everyone

Why your pants say 30 when the tape says 34

You're not measuring wrong. And your pants aren't lying, exactly. The two numbers are just different kinds of number.

Different numbers. Both can be right.

1. A "30" isn't necessarily 30 inches. Men's pant sizes started out as actual inches. These days the number on the tag works more like a size code. Every brand cuts to its own pattern, in its own fabric, with its own idea of a comfortable fit — so two pairs both marked 30 can measure quite differently around the waistband. Usually bigger than 30.
2. Clothes are built to fit you, not to match the tape. A waistband doesn't have to be the same distance around as your body to fit it. Stretch fabric, elastic and a bit of built-in tension mean a relaxed waistband can measure smaller than the body it sits on quite happily. Ours certainly do.

So if you've worn a 30 your whole adult life and the tape says 34, nothing has gone wrong — both numbers are telling the truth about different things. Use your tape measurement in the chart above. It's the one that gets your fit right first go. Your usual pant size is a decent sanity check, but it varies enough between brands that we wouldn't bet your summer on it.
